About the course

Course content

Analog and digital modulation techniques. Phase Locked Loop (PLL). Channel quality: Distortion, Intermodulation and Noise. Coding. Superheterodyne receiver. Transmission lines and antennas. The Smith Chart. S-parameters. Vector Network Analyzer.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student should be able to: a) Be able to account for different analogue and digital modulation methods and their characteristics b) Be able to explain how a Phased Locked Loop (PLL) is working c) Be able to account for important aspects with channel quality d) Know basic methods for coding and error correction of digital signals e) Be able to explain the principle of superheterodyne receivers f) Be able to account for reflections and matching methods in transmission lines g) Be able to account for antennas as system components

Skills: The student should be able to: a) do calculations on signal power and noise in communication systems b) do calculations on signals on transmission lines both using mathematical formulas and by using the Smith Chart

General competence: The student should be able to: a) know common terms within electronic communication b) use relevant computer programs c) know modern measurement equipment (Vector Network Analyzer)

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, Independent exercises. The number of mandatory exercises is stated at the start of the semester. Mandatory exercises must be delivered according to specified deadlines and must be approved in order to take the exam.

Approved mandatory work requirements are valid up to and including the following academic year.

Re-sit exam in May/June (can be conducted as oral).
